Rea LanguageInteractive Story Markup

Write branching narratives with a simple, expressive syntax — v0.1.0

Why Rea?

Interactive fiction and branching narratives have always required either programming skills or compromises in what you can express. Rea was created to remove this barrier — to give authors a language as readable as the story itself, yet powerful enough to handle complex narrative mechanics.

What Rea offers

  • Plain text is a valid story — no boilerplate, no configuration to get started. Just write.
  • Progressive complexity — simple stories need nothing more than text formatting. Branching, variables, logic, and multimedia are optional layers you add only when you need them.
  • Multimedia as a language feature — images, audio, video, and voice output are not add-ons but native syntax elements.
  • Cooperative reading — multiple readers can share the same story in real time, each with their own perspective.
  • Real-world interactions — GPS, QR codes, device sensors, and timers open stories into the physical environment.
  • Accessibility from the ground up — screen reader support, keyboard navigation, and alternative text are built directly into the syntax.
